accelerated trip through a transforming Mandelbox. here I was playing around with folding values whilst entering the box. Sorry about the clipping! I love this new software and I feel like I am really getting to grips with it now. I have actually worked out what the cause of clipping is now! and there will be no more of it!!! this is actually playing at double speed. the original slower 4 minute version is below….

This is my first upload that utilises “depth of field”
the depth of field (DOF) is the portion of fractal that appears sharp or blurred in the image.
Wth depth of field you can make the fractal appear very large or very small -
bags of fun!!

“height rip” is an animation of a scale -2 mandelbox.
I say -2 but that is only approximate, as the scale is manipulated throughout the first half of this animation.
Manipulation of the scale parameter (which does not change the overall size of the box, just the way its structured!) and many other parameter manipulations such as depth of focus and perspective were made possible for this animation – by the addition of a key framing option to the software used (mandelbulber)

although still very young, this amazing piece of software is able to produce many more wonders than what you see above. In fact I don’t ever think I will do it justice, and it is being updated all the time. As well as the mandelbox there are lots of other 3D types that I will be animating over the next few years – It so easy to use and so much fun – I still wonder inside every day how on earth this is open source (free) There is a god – a fractal god.

This is the results from my first animation of the 3d fractal known as the “mandelbox”
in this relatively plain 3d fractal animation, I travel towards one corner of the box – revealing its infinite complexity and depth – until I ran out of precision for the mathematical calculations required to produce the images. Thats why it gets a little jerky towards the end!

After rendering my first few animations of the mandelbox – I found my camera skills leaving a lot to be desired, when it came to moving around and into the mandelbox! Some movements were too quick and jerky – whilst others took too long to play out. So I have been trying my video editing skills to resolve the problem.
To smooth the camera’s pitch and roll, I remapped the time of the fast areas to slow them down, that worked, but although the camera had smoothed out, the animation was very jerky as it was only 4-5frames per seconds at some points. Now you can just blend original frames together to create new ones and put them in between the originals – fine if you have at least 15-20fps to play with but when the frame rate is as low as 4-5fps (normally i render at 30fps) it gives bad results. so instead I used a pixel blending technique to create the brand new frames – so that the video could slow down without the animation losing details.

I have decided they were good results – although it led to a longer post production time.

Mandelbox fractal rendered with Depth of Field effect

Similar to the previous renders, but with updated visuals, where the iteration count determines the colour from gold – through grey obsidian and to self illuminating red&yellow lava. A red point light without occlusion has been added at the centre of the mandelbulb to give effect of illumination from the lava below. Volumetric yellow fog is computed, where iteration count determines the density of the fog. The flight path has been smoothed using Catmull Rom splines after many suggestions over at fractalforums.com. Render time was 1:48 (hours) using a pair of ATI Radeon HD 5850s, but setting up the flight path took considerably longer.
