The seed numbers for this julia set are based on the “golden ratio”

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_ratio

included in the email was they original image the sender rendered in fractint. Here it is – Click on it to view it full size. (you also see this image at the start of the animation)

For those who dont know, Fractint was a dos based fractal program and in my opinion probably one of the best pieces of open source ever to be released!

Anyways hope Alan and everyone else enjoys this zoom.
Its one hundred zooms exactly

On Saturday the academic world mourns the end of the life one of one of the most brilliant mathematicians known.
Benoit B. Mandelbrot, the inventor of “fratal geometry” died of pancreatic cancer in Cambridge on Thursday, his family said. He was 85.
An insightful teacher, Mr. Mandlebrot brought The Mandlebrot Set to the public so that anyone with an interest in mathematics, from rank amateurs and beginner students to brilliant Ivy League geniuses, could study it.
He was the Sterling Professor Emeritus of Mathematical Sciences at Yale University.
Mr. Mandlebrot leaves his wife, Aliette, two sons, Laurent, of Paris, and Didier, of Newton. He also leaves three grandchildren.
A memorial service is being planned.

R.I.P.

While he coined the term “fractal”, expended the concept’s use and understanding, and won the hearts of the masses with his super cool computer representations – it’s good to remember that he stood on the shoulders of great mathematicians who came before him in the field, such as Weierstrass, Koch, Cantor, and Gaston Julia.

For most of his career, Dr. Mandelbrot had a reputation as an outsider to the mathematical establishment. From his perch as a researcher for I.B.M. in New York, where he worked for decades before accepting a position at Yale University, he noticed patterns that other researchers may have overlooked in their own data, then often swooped in to collaborate.

“He knew everybody, with interests going off in every possible direction,” Professor Mumford said. “Every time he gave a talk, it was about something different.”

Dr. Mandelbrot traced his work on fractals to a question he first encountered as a young researcher: how long is the coast of Britain? The answer, he was surprised to discover, depends on how closely one looks. On a map an island may appear smooth, but zooming in will reveal jagged edges that add up to a longer coast. Zooming in further will reveal even more coastline.

“Here is a question, a staple of grade-school geometry that, if you think about it, is impossible,” Dr. Mandelbrot told The New York Times earlier this year in an interview. “The length of the coastline, in a sense, is infinite.”

In the 1950s, Dr. Mandelbrot proposed a simple but radical way to quantify the crookedness of such an object by assigning it a “fractal dimension,” an insight that has proved useful well beyond the field of cartography.

Over nearly seven decades, working with dozens of scientists, Dr. Mandelbrot contributed to the fields of geology, medicine, cosmology and engineering. He used the geometry of fractals to explain how galaxies cluster, how wheat prices change over time and how mammalian brains fold as they grow, among other phenomena.

His influence has also been felt within the field of geometry, where he was one of the first to use computer graphics to study mathematical objects like the Mandelbrot set, which was named in his honor.

“I decided to go into fields where mathematicians would never go because the problems were badly stated,” Dr. Mandelbrot said. “I have played a strange role that none of my students dare to take.”

I had the pleasure of conversing with a photographer just two days ago and he showed me some examples of his work. I was blown away. He gave me a link to the website where he has some of his images available for all to see and today it is my great pleasure to reveal to you this website that contains many beautiful images. These images have literally been taken from different counties from all over the world. Each image contains a story and comes from a different part of the globe. I am sure that you would agree with me when I tell you that there are clearly some of the most beautiful views of humanity that you will ever feast your eyes upon. So without further ado, I present to you “our forgotten children”

When I am looking for inspiration for my fractal animations I draw on all types of artists and their work – even if it is not directly related to fractals – I find that ideas for colour palettes and fractal patterns filling my head as I examine and absorb the artists work.
This post focuses on the work of a photographer called Hannah Betts. I like to use her work as inspiration because as well as getting some amazing shots of nature, she also does photography for events and club nights – and i love that kind of stuff!

In fact, some of the photos shot in the clubs have been most inspirational to me, because as well as enjoying club nights myself – the colours from all of the funky lights in the club and the general mood captured in the shots gets my creative brain juices flowing. Here are a few of my favourites…

Jusk click on any of the photos to be taken through to Hannah Betts photostream at Flickr.

He is the kind of man that makes me proud to stand up and say that I am british. Ever since I sat down at christmas over a decade ago and watched Richard Dawkins give a series of 5 lectures – collectivity called “growing up in the universe” I am always happy to listen to what the man has to say.

here are the five lectures from 1992. Although they are from over a decade ago, they still hold fascinating insight into the universe and also insight into the way Richard thinks as well.

Amazing stuff! Dawkins is very eloquent with his explanations, and I love the surprise appearance of Douglas Adams in the fourth lecture! It is a real treat to hear him read some of his book to us!!!

One of the things that I find fascinating about Richard Dawkins is the effort he puts into raising peoples awareness of the way we and the universe came about. Richard point blank refuses to accept that there is a “God”.

Now I don’t mind admitting that I do not believe in god myself – I am an atheist. I do not think that just because I am an atheist, I should be treated differently to someone who has a “faith”. Well that is what happens in this world. A lot of atheists do not like to admit the fact to their friends and family for fear of arguments or upset, others have to lie about their beliefs because otherwise certain jobs are not available to them. Those jobs happen to be some of the most important jobs in the world. If all the atheists “came out” we would realise that we are far more numorus that we realise.

Did you know that a cross section of people were examined and tested for level of intelligence and also checked to see if they had a religion or not. It turns out that the more intelligent you are, the less likely you are to believe in a god.

Have you heard of TED? watch this video to see the kind of things that TED gets up to!
